Working with the Homeless

Ask a Question
Working with the Homeless
We’re all very familiar with seeing homeless people on the streets of our cities and towns. Some of us might feel sympathy with them and offer them some loose change or even buy them a hot drink or meal but the reality is that the majority of us will simply walk on by without so much as a thought or a second glance. We all tend to take the fact that we have sufficient food to eat and a warm safe bed in which to sleep very much for granted.

However if you’ve ever sat down and thought about what it is REALLY like to be homeless – it is quite a scary proposition and it could happen to any one of us. There are many ways you can volunteer to help with the homeless and to give your time and effort to this cause can be very rewarding for both the volunteer and the homeless person alike.

Helping out at a Shelter

There are many types of different shelter where you can volunteer your services. There are those for the elderly, battered women, drug addicts, children and single mothers – all of which are crying out for volunteers to help them. You might be signing in new residents, helping with counselling the homeless, assisting with providing the homeless with information on how and where to get aid from the likes of social services, for example.

Within these shelters will be a variety of people. There may be those who have become ‘institutionalised’ to living on the streets and simply may want to stop by for a few hours to get warm or to get a hot meal and others who might be ‘resident’ and using the shelter as a stepping stone on the way to achieving a place of their own and becoming more self-sufficient. These places can often bring both volunteers and the homeless very close together spiritually in our understanding of the basic human needs of warmth, food and shelter.

Working in a Soup Kitchen

These provide one of the basic necessities of survival in providing food and drink for the homeless and others who may be disadvantaged and heavily rely on volunteers to help with preparing meals, picking up the food from suppliers, serving the food and cleaning up afterwards.

Using your Work Skills and Hobbies

Voluntary work with the homeless need not just be about ensuring that they have the basic sustenance to survive and it involves far much more than simply keeping them alive. Every one of us will have a skill gained through work or a hobby that can help the homeless. Doctors, dentists and other medical staff, for example, can help treat the homeless in clinics and lawyers will be able to help with any legal matters the homeless person might be experiencing.

You may have a skill gained through a hobby like photography, for example, and in some cases, not only might that inspire a homeless person to want to learn more, it can often kick start them into believing more in their own skills and there are many success stories of homeless people who have gone on to forge successful careers as a result of being inspired by a volunteer in this kind of way. So, teachers as well can play a part in this in their spare time.

Supporting Independence

There will be those who have finally broken free of the ‘homeless’ tag and may have found independent accommodation of their own. And, whilst this is a positive step on their long road to independence, they might need help with simple tasks such as learning how to balance a budget or help with paying household bills, or helping organise washing, cleaning, shopping and cooking duties for them until they can do it for themselves so there are plenty of opportunities to help people in their own homes too as well as in shelters.

Escorting on Trips

A number of charities will often lay on transport to take the homeless on a day out to relieve them of the pressures of their predicaments for a while. You may wish to volunteer your services as a driver or an escort to help them on their day out.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

The Importance of Showing Respect

The only way that you can successfully help the homeless is to show them the same degree of respect that you would show to anybody. Each and every one of us has talent and skills and a homeless person’s skills might simply be lying untapped through years of neglect, abuse or illness. By supporting them in the right way, you can help to build up their trust and confidence and help to bring their talents to the fore, which can be very rewarding indeed for you as a volunteer.

Organisations to Contact

To find out more information about ways you can work with the homeless, contact organisations like Shelter, Crisis, Centrepoint, Hope Worldwide, Emmaus, the Depaul Trust and there are many others too which you’ll find on the internet.

Does your Organisation Help the Homeless?

If you run a charity or non-profit organisation that helps with the homeless and you are looking for volunteers, please email us with your details (the email address is on the contact us page). We are often asked for information relating to certain areas of the UK in our comments section especially by those who want to volunteer at Christmas time, so we will be happy to include your details in our responses.

If you'd like to make a difference and help those experiencing homelessness in your community, you can use our free Volunteer Role Finder.

Currently in a homeless hostel myself, after experience of the horrors of sleeping rough, I really want to give something back...
I'm York based, and don't drive, but I'm great at walking (and talking!!!)
Anyone close looking for an extra pair of hands?
I'll do anything, cleaning, cooking, serving, litter picking... there's nothing I'd turn my nose up at!

Peace
Jx

Happy to help out to cook, dish up, do the dishes, clean up, chat, craft, make and drink tea on Christmas day or Boxing day. I am in North London - Enfield.
I wanted to sign up with Crisis, but they were already fully booked when I came around to check them out beginning of December.
I have just checked out Shelter, they ask for donations. This time around, I would like to offer my time.
Let me know if you have other suggestions.

I live in Edinburgh and would like to volunteer in some way to help the homeless. A few nights ago I spent an hour chatting to a guy who was on the streets. I sat down on the pavement with him and just chatted. He said it made him feel valued and human. I hugged him goodbye and wished him well. Ever since then I have tried to search for something I could do to help but I'm struggling. I'm in full time employment so I can't commit to many hours but I would like to offer a few evenings or weekends to get involved. Can you offer any advice on what I can get involved with?

I would like to volunteer in Fife, Scotland for the homeless in the kitchen, I have celiac disease, where I can't eat wheat or gluten and I am sure there are homeless people with this disease who find it very difficult to get food without gluten and wheat in it, and I would love to make sure they are getting gluten free food, especially over Christmas, it is a difficult time for all of them at this time of year made more stressful by not joining in the festivities with everyone else, if I can help at all please email me, I would love too, Thank you

I am a 36yr old lady who will be spending Christmas on my own this year becausey children will be going to their fathers.
I am looking forward to putting my energies into volunteering in the run up to and Xmas morning to keep myself busy and give something back to the community.
This time last year I myself was homeless living of sofas at friends and family after a marriage breakdown and also the death of my brother who vomited suicide.
I've suffered with depression and anxiety and I feel this would be the ultimate gift to volunteer my services as and where needed. I am no stranger to hard work and would live to carry on after Xmas as well if all goes well.

Hi,
I'm working full time as I do a cover for my manager.. Especially before Christmas.. But I'm off Christmas Eve and 2 days after.. So i would like to help somewhere where it's needed... Church, homeless, kids, hospital...
But I'm not registered anywhere in UK.. I did volunteer in hospital in my country, but don't know what's necessary in here.. And if I can help on Christmas anyway.. I'm located in Hale Barns. Thank you.

I'm early 60's - my wife mid 50's. We have a large extended family which is spread countrywide but there's still a bit of time available and we'd dearly love to help. Is there a soup kitchen or something similar in the Chelmsford area where our services could be of use? We both still work full time and weekends are often committed - but some aren't and we could offer some evening time. We see people on the street and feel we should help - we even thought about Sunday morning rounds of the city centre with flasks of soup as the rough-sleepers awake... is it a good idea, or could we be part of a better service?

I started a Christmas Day lunch and entertainment with my Church for anyone in the village who would be alone on Christmas Day. It's still going strong. So.....if your Church has a hall and kitchen have a word with your local Vic! Its a great day and, as volunteers you get to cook, serve, eat with then entertain your guests. We organise lifts to and from as well. May be too late for this year but loads of time for next Christmas. I suggest you aim for at least 2 teams of volunteers so it can be done every year. Go for it!

Some charities will accept 14 years olds (and above) to help in their charity shops but unfortunately many of the homeless organisations require that you are 16 or over.

VoluntaryWorker Editor 21/06/2016 at 11:55 am
Many organisations have a minimum age limit of 16 years old especially where volunteers could be affected by vulnerable/disillusioned adults etc. If you search the internet with the term "Somerset homeless volunteering" you'll get some quite useuful results. If volunteering directly with the homeless is not possible, your son might want to try some fund raising for a specific homeless charity.
H 20/06/2016 at 11:19 am
My son who is 7 has been asking to help out the homeless people in our country,he is very passionate about it.We live in Somerset and would like to know if he is able to help out with me

I'd like to set up a soup kitchen of my own some day but don't even know where to start. I know the main issues are location, funding & volunteers, but I haven't even got that far yet. Is there anyone out there who has started something from scratch who could possibly help? I feel that this is my calling, but don't have a clue what to do. I have helped out in one before as a cook/server, so have a bit of experience with the work involved, but not the actual running of it.

I would like to volunteer in the soup kitchen by feeding the homeless and interacting with them to motivate them to see a brighter future. I am an entrepreneur and business graduate and soon to be fully pledged philanthropist. I believe my skills and abilities will help the homeless motivate them to do better as many of them have hit rock bottom. I know what that's like and coming from a culture where food is a way to show appreciating and spending quality time, this opportunity will give me a chance to give back and really make a difference. I live in North London and would love to help in the surrounding area.

New Year, new help,

I am interested in working with the homeless, I can not afford to donate cash, however, I can donate something a damn site more precious and rewarding and that is my time.

It really saddened me just before Xmas I was asked for some pennies for a hot drink and I honestly couldnt afford to buy this fella a cuppa at the time.

So I am looking in the Nottinghamshire area please, if you could forward me contacts, I'd be real grateful. Cheers Polly

I live in the warwick/Birmingham area, work full time, and am looking for evening/night time volunteering maybe once a month? I hold a level two food hygiene certificate.

I used to run lunch clubs and support people in their homes, however, due to the break up of my marriage have been forced into 9 til 5 office work, and am desperate to get back into doing something worthwhile.

If I could find a full time job in the charity sector (Im currently a finance clerk) that would be my ideal.

Hi I am wanting to volunteer to help the homeless over the xmas period...I can do xmas eve xmas day boxing day new years eve and news years day...
I dont drive but am happy to pay for taxis buses so I can do a couple of the days...
Nothamptonshire/Oxfordshire Area

Why do I want to help?....  I've been there, 2002/2003, I had no address I was 'sofa surfing' staying wherever I could, and when there was nowhere I had to spend the all night outside.  I was addicted to alcohol and did drugs....I had nobody...and it's the worst place to be....Christmas 2002 gave a whole new meaning to the emotion of lonely...After suffering an extreme trauma Boxing Day 2003 I got lucky and my father came back into my life and got me housed in a hostel and since then has taught me life skills, guided and supported me so I was able to turn my life round and in 2007 I got sober.  Although diagnosed with bipolar and recurrent depression I have a job which I do 2 days a week in Banbury and I have a home.

I know how lucky I am and I will never forget where I came from and the feelings I felt, so I understand whole heartedly what these guys are going through and that's why I want to help, I want to help them feel apart of something, feel a little less alone, let them know people care, make this time of year a little more bare able.

hi, my niece and I are interested in doing some kind of voluntary work, whether it be Soup Kitchens, charity shops or anything where volunteers are needed, however, my niece is 15 years old and we were wondering at what age is considered acceptable to do this? Do volunteers have to be 16/18+ We are in Manchester.

Many thanks and we look forward to your reply

I really want to volunteer my time on Xmas eve, Xmas day (afternoon(because I'm working in the morning) and boxing day to help/support homeless teenagers/young adults (in particular) in TORQUAY, DEVON. In the past few months I have seen a rise in homeless young people in the bay and it saddens me everyday as at any point in my life this could have been me. As a care leaver myself I am someone who has lost everything, I have no family or friends and would rather like to help those who are in actual need of support from someone who "understands".

Contact local hospitals and GP surgeries to see if the accept voluntary help. In terms of driving/shopping the Leeds Volunteer Centre would be a good place to start. If you're interested in helping the homeless try the followingL Simon on the Streets - offers street-based support for those in need St Georges Crypt - a Leeds charity working with the homeless, the vulnerable and those suffering from addiction. Good morning, I am interested in volunteering to help the homeless in leeds. I am from the pudsey area and work at a hospital doing phlebotomy if any of your voluntary doctors want blood tests I am able to do this to free up there time to help another individual. I am also a relatively good cook and able to drive to get shopping or other items. I also have time to just listen and talk to people who donylt have that daily contact. I would appreciate if someone could advise me on how to use these skills and who to contact. Thanks beckii

Myself and my family (husband and 10 year old son )
We would love to help in a homeless shelter over Xmas
I used to work with the elderly every Xmas and would love to help the homeless I was told my son had to be 10
It's part of what I want him to learn and show him he really wants to help others and I think it would be perfect lesson in life to raising a more thoughtful compassionate child (he already is )
The real meaning of Xmas
If you can give me any advise of where we can do this please

any volunteer work helping homeless etc in Cardiff for xmas eve and xmas day..thankyou..
VoluntaryWorker Editor 14/10/2015 at 12:28 pm
What a great idea. The easiest way to do this would be via one of the many charitable homeless organisations such as The Wallich Emmaus South Wales Llamau Shelter Cymru You could also contact your local council where you can get help with any legislative issues such as hygiene practices and DBS applications (if necessary) etc.

I would very much like to volunteer in Plymouth helping out in soup kitchen. Please contact me
VoluntaryWorker Editor 04/12/2014 at 1:41 pm
@carol - do a search with your town name and something along the lines of "Homeless volunteering" etc - that should bring up results of charities and organisations in your area that help with the homeless.
Carol 02/12/2014 at 7:59 pm
Who do I contact to apply to volunteer to work with the homeless ?
VoluntaryWorker Editor 04/12/2014 at 1:43 pm
@maggot - we do not have volunteering opportunities ourselves but if search on the internet for volunteering and your town name, you should come up with some useful ideas.

@Marty and other London people. There are lots and lots of homeless charities that do things around Christmas in London. Rather than listing them all here for you, if you try search engine and type in homeless volunteering London, you'll get plenty of results to try. We will continue to try and help with details of other areas of the UK.

I have been trying (without much luck) to find a non-religious soup kitchen that I can volunteer with in the Tameside Manchester area. Sadly the ones I have contacted have a strong emphasis on spreading their beliefs as well as food and drinks and have made it clear they would prefer volunteers to do the same.
Thank you in advance.

Hi, I have recently just separated from my fiance of three years. He was everything to me and I truly feel complete emptiness inside. I feel the same as I did when my mum died 7 years ago when I was pregnant. As I sit here, moping and feeling sorry for myself, I can't help but think about others who are so much less fortunate than I am. Although I feel it is the end of the world, I realise that on Christmas day, rather than being alone, I would like to help those going through harder times than myself. I want to help in any way that I can. It would be so satisfying to do this, rather than sit at home alone.
I live in the Manchester area, and was wondering if I could volunteer over Christmas and the run up to Christmas, and any evenings after work in the meantime?
Please can someone let me know if this is possible, I am struggling to find anywhere. Thanks
Jo 14/11/2012 at 1:16 pm

I would like to help out in a soup kitchen Xmas 2012. Or any other help that would be of use to charity or organisation for homeless people on Xmas day. I have always meant to find out more and be of use. I would love to share this with my son, 12. Although realise he is probably too young. I want him to be compassionate and open and care and know that it's not ok and there is always something that he can give. We are in Eastbourne.

I am thinking of volunteering in a social services centre (homeless, domestic violence, drug addiction etc). I understand some clients become aggressive .

Question

Is it advisable to work in a centre where I do not live?

Is it risky working the centre in the suburb where i live?

Thanks for advice

I would like to know where myself and my husband (late 20s early 30s) can help in our area of Halifax/ Bradford? I am in full time employment and my Husband owns his own business and are both keen to give something back to our area. We have seen a rise in people on the streets in our area over the past few years an dit is a worrying thought to both of us.
