@Andrea Your local Youth Offending Team is a good place to start, as they often need mentors and appropriate adult volunteers. Have a look on the gov.uk site to find your nearest team, then ring them directly and ask about their volunteer programme. It's also worth checking Do-it.org and your council's volunteering pages, where you'll find roles with youth clubs, Barnardo's and The Prince's Trust. Be prepared for a DBS check and some training before you start.

@Leigha Your best route is to contact your local Youth Offending Team directly through your council's website, as recruitment is handled at a local level rather than nationally. Most YOTs run appointed mentor or volunteer schemes, and they'll usually want you to complete an application, references and an enhanced DBS check before training begins. With your background, you'd likely be a strong fit for mentoring roles. Worth also looking at organisations like Nacro or Catch22 for related experience while you wait.

I'd love to do mentoring work with young people, I was a young offender myself (I'm 40 now lol) and I have experience of a broad range, Foster care, residential schools, young offenders, prison. I feel I would be good at resonating with a lot of these kids, sometimes it's better to have experience (lived experience) and having all the knowledge and tools to be able to share my experiences and where it led me may help even one child/young person. I feel like this is my calling now, amd hope to go further into this field to help our youth and the parents as well, I'm a parent myself and I dread to think that my children could go down these paths.
I do other voluntary work as well, and would be really keen to volunteer in this sector in any capacity.

Hi, I would love to gain further experience around working alongside young offenders or kids/youth with mental health/trauma/offending history etc. I notice there are a lot of applications for help but I cannot see a reply to any. Whether that's because its hidden for personal reasons I'm not sure but I do hope these people all get a reply atleast. I too have a wealth of personal experience and listening/samaritan skills and training. Recovery background. Ex offender no criminal past now since 2011. Hi i am currently unemployed suffering myself with m.e, I've been a hairdresser/barber from being 16 yrs old, I trained at Granville college for 2 yrs on a YTS scheme, it's something I have always done and still do friends and family from time to time. I am 42 yrs old and interested in volunteering to train up youth offenders to cut hair so maybe to better their life and a chance at getting a trade behind them. which would also get me out there mixing myself while helping others at the same time.

Hi, I'm looking to do some volunteering around this area or just any area that involves helping people. I have always been in interested in the law and particularly learning about the reasons why people take the actions that they do. I am a graduate in Criminology eagerly looking to gain some experience in the Youth Justice Sector within Hertfordshire.
I feel so strongly that no young person is a loss cause and recognise that re-offending rates in this country paint a rather disturbing picture of young offenders and the Youth Justice System. I found looking into Criminogenic needs and social factors fascinating when looking into why young people offend and can clearly see the hurdles that arise with multi agency working - as you must with this group of vulnerable people.
I would like to broaden my knowledge and understanding of how the different agencies work together in terms of crime prevention strategies and, at the other end of the spectrum, rehabilitating young offenders. I have a keen interest in Restorative Justice as a rehabilitative measure and would love to be a part of this relatively new, and up and coming method of deal with young offenders.
I would be available immediately for up to 3 days a week, Experience is necessary and I would be grateful for any volunteer opportunities within my local Youth Offending Team whereby i can see my studies put into practice and see first hand how young offenders are dealt with by the Youth Justice System.

Hi My Name is Shane I live in Hatfield in Hertfordshire. I was raised in Hatfield by my Father as my Mother left me and my Brother. My Grandmother & Grandad were also helping my Father with myself and my Brother. At the age of about 9 years old I had my first cigarette,Shoplifting and hanging around the streets with other lads and my brother. I then got in with the wrong crowd and in 2003 I spent 6mths in Prison and in April 2004 when I came out of prison I said to myself enough was enough so I moved away from the area. I am now back living in Hatfield and if I can give advice or support to youths that a life of crime doesn't get you anywhere in life. Hi,at the age of 14 I became homeless,prison drugs ect,I've been there and had a pretty horrendous life,I've got it together now I'm now 62!!yes and still alive! hi I've been doing my own kind of freelance mentoring and work with the local youths where I live in West Norwood now for roughly 4 years and have made quite a few positive steps with the individuals thst come to me I've also written a book on relationships between teens and parents under the roof...which I hope to get published soon but I'm very interested in now joining with an active up and running organisation and wondered how to go about it..I believe I would be a valued addition to any team and I have come from a troublesome back ground and have turned it all around which was far from easy but the hardness is what made it become who I am now and I would simply like to be part of any organisation that is serious about tackling the problem.of youth offending....

I am very interested in applying for a part-time volunteering position within the Youth Offending Team; particularly mentoring, being part of a youth offending panel and/or becoming an appropriate adult.

I have a BSc degree in Psychology, graduating with a 2:1 from Coventry University in May 2013.

I am currently working full time in the Admissions department of a boarding school in London, but I am very keen to gain some experience working with offenders.

I have wanted to pursue volunteering with young offenders for a couple of years, but I had decided to travel first so had not managed to be able to commit myself to it.

I am currently not working due to my son still only at nursery? I want to spend the next two years volunteering and getting as much experience as possible.

Construct two cover letters (to accompany your CV), in the letter, include as much as you can about yourself, your course, your ultimate aspirations and why you feel that this particular type of work placement would be the most suitable (one for social work and one specifically for youth offending work). Send them to the relevant departments at Nottinghamshire County Council. You'll find the address on the website. It would be worth your while to call and find out the name of the people to whom you should address each request.

I had worked as a social worker in a wide number of different mental health team and also children and families team. Over the past few years I worked with offenders for a private company and enjoyed working with offenders, more than the other roles I was doing before. Therefore I have decided to aim for just working within the area working with offenders because I have also found that it involves all other aspects in social work that I have done before. Helping people to turn there lives around in the way of getting back into education or employment is very rewarding for me because its also lead to safer communities which leads to a safer society.

I've been offered a place at YMCA George Williams College in London to study youth and community development but a condition of the position is 20 voluntary hours a week in a youth position - does anyone know anything available around Reading Berkshire? I work full time in retail so have to work around shifts til September which is the tricky part as no set shift pattern at the moment.

@PeterM - do not let the trouble you were in when you were younger put you off. It may actually help you see things from the same perspective as other young offenders and enable you to help them more effectively. Hi, I have just completed my Masters degree in public health. During my study, I conducted a research project "association between social economic inequalities and young offenders". During this project, I became more interested to know more about the factors that led our young generation to be on the other side of the law. To get answers to my questions, I have realised that I have to engage more with the young offenders. I have decided to take on a voluntary work to achieve this, which am sure it will equip me with enough knowledge, experience and skills to start a career as a young offender's officer.

i am 22 year old and have a 2 year old son. i volunteered for the youth offending team in ashington and was a mentor, i started october last year, recently i got offered a paid job in residential child, also attend college full time and teaching assistant for leap students, all to which i was massively proud of and very happy coming from not the best background i felt massive acheievement. however when it came to explain to the mentor coordinator that i could no longer manage the mentoring due to work college and having my son, saying thank you for oppourtunity i very much enjoyed and appreciated and if i ever found time again i would be more than happy to commit more time again. expecting a thank you and well done on your job etc but NO shocking i was made to feel absolutly terrible and asked questions such as how i think the person would feel about being let down by me, what i suggest they do for this young person, i basically had to go into the office to explain my monday to monday scheduale and felt patronised when being told it is important that i should mannage my life and time better to ensure i do not let young people down. i went from been over the moon on getting a job inwhich will enable to provide for my son and hopefully the start of a career and honetly speaking if could mannage and had time i would have continued with the mentoring but i just dont have the time, i was made to feel awful and very pushed into continuing with the mentoring which is impossible. so i went from been happy and proud of mysel to feeling very guilty and awful, which is upsetting if im honest i expeceted a well done and thak you for the time you have put in and the FREE work and hours you have done. basically just be aware if your considering volunteering that they expect at least 1 years commitment, a lot can happen in 1 year and things change i would hate anyone to be made to feel the way i have been due to changes in life. also another girl metoring around about my age said she felt pressured into finding and paying for her own childcare so that she could go out and mentor young people. i think a volunteer should not be out of poket!
it is an amazing thing to do and very rewarding i loved th mentoring and had no problems until i needed to end it, i was awfully shocked and put off by the response and would not return. basically just making people aware of my experience which has upset me, i never ever wanted to hear i had let anyone down afterall iv put time and effort into helping out and changing things for better, very disapointed to after hard work and effort i had to leave feeling bad about myself. but at the end of day we all work for the same thing and this is to pay bills and provide i would have been crazy to turn down a good job to continue volunteering i have a home and a 2 year old. very disapointed.

I am a family support worker working in five schools in the hillingdon area between the ages of 0 to 18 I work closely with Social services. I would love the opportunity to work with young offenders to widen my knowledge. I have a son who has made the wrong choices in the past and would love the chance to help guide others to take the right path in life.

I do work with young offenders and trained very hard to do so. They are not guinni pigs for your dissertations and other uni projects. They are young human beings. The goverment are wanting to use you as guinni pigs to be exploited so to privatise services and cut costs.Are you so blind not to see this, as soon no one will be working when your thinking about volunteering with some of the most vunerable children out there. This kids deserve better and a desperate resource is accomodation......offer a spare bedroom if you really want to help and be paid to do so....seconds thoughts maybe now. I have resently lost my job as a teaching assistant in a high school. I want a change of carear now so I am studying again, hoping to brush up on my English and maths.

I want to get involved in a team that helps youth offenders and their family's and I feel by helping out doing voluntary work, this might help me follow the right path?

I like working with young people and naturally have a good repore with them. I know I would be good at this sort of work.

Hi,I am currently studying Criminology at University and I have decided to take a year out to do an Internship or Volunteer work which will be valuable experience in my studies.I have previously worked with young people whilst at college studying BTEC Health and Social care and working with young people is where my interest lies. I would be very grateful if It possible to work with your organisation as it sounds really interesting and something that relates to what I wish to further my career in. Thank you

I am in my 3rd year studying theatre and am currently in the process of starting to write my dissertation about the use of drama to help young offenders and if it actually works. any info or case studies you may have that I could possibly use would be muchly appreciated.

I am currently studying a degree in Social Studies and Youth Justice, I am looking for a placement, as im in my second year of studies and for my one module I need to do a placement. I was wondering whether I would be able to work with youths in Cardiff as I would like to gain the knowledge of what it would be like to help youths, as I have a understanding of what they go through and would like to help them, please would it be possible to do volunteer work with Cardiff.

I am about to start studying criminology at a london university, and I would like to find out about volunteering with a youth offending team in any sector. I have previous experience with Kensington and Chelsea and am looking to broaden my knowledge and experience rather than just text book taught knowledge. Any information would be great thanks!

I am just going into my second year at Coventry University studying Applied Community and Social studies. I would love to do a voluntary placement in, and around Hinckley Leicestershire with young offenders as I would feel that by helping young people settle back into the community would be beneficial.

Hello my names andrea and I'm 24 years of age. I've grown up in what they call an urrban area and have witnessed a lot of young youth offending. My aim is to become a advocate/mentor for such individuals to help them want to help themselves 1st and like myself help others that have gone through such things in life. I want to make mentoring my proffession I have a passion for this work criteria and have always said this is what I'll do when my son starts nursery. I can sing and I can dance so I'd like to direct the youths that have talent to make something out of it this might distract them from the streets like it done for me. The youths these days just wake up to try stay alive which is so sad. I'd like to help that and would be honored to
volunteer in this sector.

i am interested in volunteering as a mentor for young offenders but cant find out how to apply!!!! I currently work for a charity and volunteer in my spare time, home visiting vulnerable families with children under 5 to offer support and freindship. I have just completed the Leicester City Council Safeguarding level 2a & 2b training and will be starting a counselling skills course in September. I am hoping to have a career in this field eventually.

Hi I've just finished my second year in college studying public services and i'm interested in furthering my skills and gaining experience. I am interested in the rehabilitation part of helping offenders re- settle back into the community, i think work such as this will help me gain experience and benefit me.

I am currently studying criminological Psychology in my 2nd year and I am hoping to base my dissertation on attitudes towards youth crime and to hopefully gain a career in this area as I am very interested in working with young offenders to aid their recovery of their individual situations and issues. I am 20 and lived in Kent my whole life, growing up I broke the law several times around my local community. We didn't have a youth club or any kind of support or just in general someone to talk to. End of 2010 I got myself in more trouble with the police and I ended up going to prison (hmp bronzefield). I served 5 weeks for the petty crime I commited. That was a realtiy shock for me I think I would be able to offer so much to young offenders before they carry on offending and take the same road I did. Or whilst 'inside' I feel I could give support and listen to their worries also make plans with them for when they are resettled back into society.
